E.C. butter blame on P.M.

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

The Government and particularly the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, have been blamed by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, for the European Community attitude to New Zealand butter exports to Europe.

He said the stance adopted by the Government towards Britain and other key members of the E.C. had not been helpful.

It had been clear that the visit of Mr Lange to Europe a few weeks ago had not gone well.. “Mr Lange has still to realise that international trade and diplomacy require tact, not smart answers,” Mr Bolger said. New Zealand’s right of access for butter to the E.C. was a crucial issue facing the dairy industry. There were no legitimate grounds by which the E.C. could significantly alter the tonnage of butter New Zealand sent to Europe, he said.
