Grand prix gets under way
NZPA-AP Belfort, France The world champion, Garry Kasparov, of the Soviet Union, won his opening match on the first day of the World Cup Chess Challenge on Tuesday, defeating the fellow Soviet, Artur Yous-
soupov. The three-week Belfort encounter, involving 16 chess grand masters, is the second of the six tournaments of the new World Cup, which has a ,
total prizemoney of $1.7 million. In addition to Kasparov, two former world champions are competing, Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union, the man Kasparov dethroned, and Boris Spassky, a naturalised Frenchman.. Karpov’s opening match, against Andrei Sokolov, of the Soviet Union, was adjourned. Spassky defeated Johann , Hjl&tarsn, of the Netherlands, ano Ulf Andersson, of
Sweden, defeated Jan Timman, of the Netherlands. The other four matches were drawn. They included Jesus Nogueir, of Cuba, against Nigel Short, of Britain; Zoltan Ribli, of Hungary, against Joan Ehlvest, of the Soviet Union; Robert Huebner, of West Germany, against Alexandre Beliavski, of the Soviet Union; and -.Jonathan Speelman,. of against Ljubomir Aubojevic, of Yugoslavia. ~
