Firemen to attempt world record
Army firemen from Burnham Military Camp will attempt to break a world record for the sake of Telethon. The six firemen will attempt to walk 40 miles while using breathing apparatus, to try to beat the record of 30.5 miles held by the crash firemen of R.A.F. base Brize Norton, England. The walk, on June 18, will be sponsored with all proceeds to Telethon.
Mars confectionery will give 10c to Telethon for every wrapper from a 60g Mars bar collected and delivered to the TVNZ telethon office, second floor, Manchester Unity building, in Manchester Street. People collecting wrappers will enter a draw to "eat a Mars bar with a star” live during Telethon. The children of the Firebird Dance Group will perform at shopping malls round Christchurch during the next few weeks, and will take up a collection for Telethon.
Homemakers Inc., of New Brighton, is making three quilts for Telethon which will be auctioned when they are complete.
Radio Avon has raised more than $lOO for Telethon, the proceeds from raffling two rugby balls, signed by members of the 1988 All Blacks and the Welsh rugby team. Snow permitting, the staff of Mount Hutt skifield plan a staff-only ski
race. Between 100 and 150 are expected to compete, at $5 a head, with all proceeds to Telethon. The Suburbs Rugby Club team and supporters plan to do their bit by passing the hat round during one of their North Hagley Park matches. Two 12 year olds, Nigel Wilson and James Williams, of Ham, have persuaded their families and friends to sponsor them in a 24-hour table tennisathon, on June 5. Mrs Maureen Haines, the “wool lady,” is again organising the knitting of -a huge Telethon scarf. She needs volunteer knitters and gifts of wool, and can be reached at the City Mission. Bankprint is typical of many firms already raising funds for Telethon, with activities such as a bring-and-buy, raffles, baby photoathon, lucky dips, book sales, even a swearathon and a yawnathon. They have raised $6OO already. People wanting to mount their own fundraising events should approach the TVNZ Telethon office, telephone 792-680.
