Dutch police find stolen paintings

NZPA-AP Amsterdam The police yesterday recovered three paintings, including works by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cezanne, stolen 10 days ago from Amsterdam’s Municipal Museum in the country’s biggest art theft. . Three Dutchmen were arrested when they tried to sell the nineteenth-century paintings in an Amsterdam hotel, said a police spokesman, Klaas Wilting. The works, whose combined worth has been estimated at up to SUSS2 million ($74.36M), were recovered undamaged, he told reporters. Mr Wilting refused to disclose any further details of the hotel transaction. He would not say whether the three suspects were thought to include the burglars who smashed a museum window and stole the three works on May 20. The paintings stolen included “Carnations,” an 1888 work by the Dutch painter, Van Gogh, “Bottle with Apples,” a still life painted in 1894 by ; the French master, Cezanne, and “The House of Maitre Billaud in Nevers,” an 1874 painting by the Dutch artist, Johan Jongkind.
