Artificial island sinks

NZPA-AAP Brisbane

A fantasy flopped yesterday when a SAustl million ($1.17 million) man-made island, complete with bars, restaurants and souvenir shops, sank off Townsville. A spokesman for the Queensland; Maritime Services Minister, Don Neal, said that Fantasy Island, the brainchild of a Townsville ehr'' trepreneur, Doug Tarca, cracked, and sank overnight in a four-metre deep lagoon at John Brewer Reef, about 40km off Townsville in north Queensland. The island was the first of its type in the world and was meant to be an “outpost” for guests at the floating Four Seasons Hotel. The oval-shaped island was towed out to sea in rough conditions and moored 200 metres from the hotel. Engineers believe the craft cracked under ' the towing strain and after rough seas continued it began to sink on Monday night, disappearing this morning. The Minister’s spokesman said fuel, and anything else that could cause an environmental hazard, had been removed from the island. Fantasy Island was fully insured. ''
