Two unions look at merger
PA Wellington The Printing Union and the Electrical and Electronics’ Union are considering a merger, says the latest issue of the Printing Union’s newspaper, “Imprint” Informal talks between the unions were held in March and both unions had a lot of common interests, the paper said. Awards for both groups, which have roughly the same membership numbers, are similarly based. Another meeting was held in mid-May to dis-
cuss the proposal. Talks will continue.
The Clothing Workers’ Association has applied to join the Maritime and Transport Workers’ Federation rather than the Council of Trade Unions, said its secretary, Mr Frank Thorn. A spokesman for the federation said the application would be dealt with next time the executive met. Membership of the federation could help the. C.W.A. in the row over imported goods, he said.
