Health workers’ strike off

PA Hamilton The Public Service Association has called off Friday’s nation-wide stopwork meetings and next week’s possible 24-hour strike by its members working in the health sector. The planned action would have disrupted public hospitals, particularly where large numbers of the staff were P.S.A. members. The president of the P.S.A., Mr Colin Hicks, said yesterday that the need for that action was “no longer apparent.” “We have served notice to the State Services Com-

mission, and by implication employing authorities, that we intend to take up the offer of further talks and as a consequence of this are prepared to withdraw notice of action,” he said. The P.S.A. served notice of the stopwork and possible strike over disagreement about the “codification” of traditional and normal conditions of employment in the wake of the State Sector Act. Psychiatric nurses, social workers, psychologists and occupational therapists are among the health workers who come under the P.S.A. umbrella.
