Ragatan likely favourite at Avondale

Special correspondent Auckland Avondale racegoers who saw Ragatan win on the course earlier this month will make him their favourite for the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Avondale' Jockey Club’s meeting this evening despite a strong Central Districts representation. The field, however, for the Wayne Wilkinson Classic is a lot stronger than the one Ragatan beat in the Hills Flooring 2200 on May 20. One of the fresh runners will be The Bishop, from Hawera, and two others, Lunar Trail from Woodville, and Chance For Gold from Awapuni. All three are also in sound form. In their latest races Lunar Trail won a 2200 metres at Foxton on May 18, The Bishop came fifth in a 1600 m at Awapuni on May 21, the distance perhaps a bit short for him, and Chance For Gold came third, the same day, over 2000 metres at Riccarton. Ragatan made a procession of his last race, being out on his own at the finish. -It was a performance in keeping with one two starts previously when he beat all except Field Dancer over 2200 metres at Ellerslie. Jetbet: 5

Another showing as good would make him one of the favourites for the $BO,OOO Fay, Richwhite Cornwall, a feature on the third day of the Great Northern carnival, on which the connections of The Bishop and Lunar Trail have undoubtedly set their sights. Exchequer and Ankorette are two others in the Wayne Wilkinson which, with further good form this time, could come into consideration for the big event at Ellerslie. Where Ragatan and Ankorette may have an advantage is in their ability to manage ground as heavy as is probable this evening, even with further drying today. Mattie Dee will continue his preparation for the Cornwall in the Jumpers' Flat, over 2200 metres, this evening, and he is certain to be a short-priced favourite. To all appearances Mattie Dee has thrived since he won so well on the course on May 20, to such a degree, that his trainer, Baggy Hillis, could allow him a further run between times, and one or other of the early days of the Auckland meeting. ( Emergencies: Franzier, Triumphant Scratched: Corsica.
