Rainy view of N.Z. landscape

The results of a rainy campervan holiday in the North Island are included in John Coley’s watercolour exhibition at the Bealey Gallery.

The Christchurch painter’s latest show features works from the last 18 months. The scenes are from Banks Peninsula, North Canterbury and the North Island.

Coley took time out to go painting near Wanganui after judging an art competition there. Rain trapped him in the cab of his campervan for the week and he painted from there.

The North Island scenes in the exhibition include Kawhia Harbour and the Manawatu Plains.

Coley, who is the director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, describes himself as “a Sunday painter now.” This exhibition took quite a while to compile because of his other commitments.

He says he enjoys the medium of watercolour which suits the New Zealand landscape very well. “I enjoy painting on location and I get away to the peninsula as often as I can to paint”

The exhibition at the Victoria Street gallery will last for three weeks. it opened on Sunday. The show’s title is “Okains and Other Places.”
