Samuel Marsden on second visit to N.Z.
PA Tauranga The Rev. Samuel Marsden greeted his welcoming party in Maori at The Elms in Tauranga last week, where his father, the Rev. R. E. Marsden opened the new chapel 23 years ago. Both men came to New Zealand in the footsteps of their ancestor, the Rev. Samuel Marsden, the pioneer missionary who
held New Zealand's first Christian service 174 years ago at Oihi Bay, Bay of Islands, on Christmas Day 1814. Mr Samuel Marsden jun., great-great-great-grandson of “old Sam,” left the Essex diocese of Chelmsford to attend a commemorative service in Australia for his ancestor, who died on May 12, 1838.
