Average household to pay $751.33
The average Christchurch household will pay $751.33, or $14.41 a week in rates this year. The $751 is about 2.87 per cent higher than last year’s average of $730. It represents about 4.39 per cent of the average takehome pay. Sewerage and drainage takes the largest sum of
$2.89 a week; streets, bridges and traffic signals $2.74; and parks, $1.73. Urban transport will get $1.52, a week’s water supply will cost $1.35, and the library, $1.21. It will cost 60c to run the central treasury and management, 59c for rubbish collection, and 46c for the North Canterbury
Catchment Board. Nineteen cents a week will be spent on the Christchurch Town Hall, and 19c on community services, 19c on health, Of every dollar of rates collected, the council, keeps 62.87 c and passes 37.13 on to the ad hoc authorities for which it collects.
