Snow closes many schools

Schoolchildren in Otago and Southland enjoyed an extra day’s holiday yesterday as snow cocooned the region on the first day of term. More than 12 schools remained closed by the weather.

In Southland, 18 schools were closed after a scm snowfall yesterday morning. Roads in Central and South Otago were affected by snow and ice. State highway 90 from Raes Junction to Tapanui was closed by 20cm of frozen snow.

Similar conditions also closed the Te Anau to Milford road. Motorists were advised to carry chains while using roads in the Palmerston, Kyeburn, and Middlemarch districts.
