Steer calf demand limited at Culverden
The demand for steer calves was limited compared with that for heifer calves which sold well at the third Culverden calf sale. A medium crowd attended the sales, and most calves stayed in North Canterbury, although buyers came from as far as Ashburton and central Canterbury. A pen of 11 SimmentalCross steer calves from J. S. Rutherford, Waiau, made the top price for steers ($290). The next highest vendor’s price went to the Clark Children’s Trust, Culverden, for 11 Hereford steers at $292. Other vendors fielding high prices were Messrs N. A. Vowles and Son, Hanmer Springs, for 15 Angus-cross, $272, and 11 Herefords for $252. Messrs A. A. D. and E. M. Barker got the next highest steer price of $244 for eight Herefords. J. Shearer, Lewis Pass, was the top vendor in heifer calf prices for 14 Herefords at $192. No other vendor managed to get anywhere near that price. The next highest was Messrs N. A. Vowles and Son at $l7B for nine Anguscross heifers, and J.
