Ship runs aground off W.A. coast
NZPA-AAP Sydney Pollution experts are to inspect a Panamanian flagged vessel which ran aground near Carnarvon on the Western Australian coast.
The Federal and state experts will inspect the ravaged Korean Star this morning to examine the extent of damage and pollution to the environment.
A Federal Sea Safety spokesman said two thirds of the vessel had been damaged extensively and authorities feared fuel oil carried on board would pollute the ocean if the vessel broke up.
Western Australian State Emergency Services on Saturday fixed a flying fox between the cliffs and the ship to transfer its 19 crew to safety. Winds of 35.45 knots had prevented a helicopter from lifting the crew off. The 30,000 ton Korean Star had run aground at Cape Curier, 50km north of Carnarvon at about 5 a.m. on Saturday, the spokesman said.
