Player behaviour good
It was a good day for player behaviour in the senior rugby competition on Saturday, 10 teams rating maximum points in the sportsmanship section of “The Press” Cup competition for the best and fairest side, and three of the remaining six teams being a bare point off top marks. Three sides, Christchurch, Shirley, and Sydenham, also achieved maximum scores for constructive rugby, giving them possibles for the day. This outcome reflected a healthy approach to the game, especially in the
Shirley—Christchurch match, which was played at a level of great intensity. But there were no unseemly incidents, because of the sporting attitude of both sides and the able control exhibited by the referee, Mr Mike Fitzgibbon. ' One of the few disappointments of the day was Hornby, which had the bottom mark of 11 points out of 20, and so dropped from third place to tenth. Points awarded on Saturday were:— Sydenham, sportsmanship 12, constructiveness 8, total 20; Shirley, 12, 8, 20;
Christchurch, 12, 8, 20; Marist, 12, 7, 19; Linwood, 12, 7, 19; Merivale, 12, 7, 19; Old Boys, 12, 6, 18; Lincoln College, 11, 6, 17; University, 12, 5, 17; Burnside, 12, 5, 17; New Brighton, 12, 5, 17; Suburbs, 11, 5,16; Lyttelton, 11, 5, 16; Albion, 9,5, 14; Belfast, 8,5, 13; Hornby, 8,3, 11.
