Casino proposal
Sir, —It has been stated that specialisation is essential in all business ventures if maximum efficiency is to be attained. If there is any validity in this statement the Christchurch City Council should be highly efficient: it specialises in promoting unemployment. Toppling a tower and now poised to counter a casino are its latest examples of opposition to tourist-oriented, labour-intensive proposals. And it is well known that as unemployment increases so does crime — especially violent crime. A casino in Christchurch has the potential to achieve something that no Government or entrepreneur has been able to achieve this century: a “drift to the south.” I can imagine many affluent North Islanders visiting the South Island (for the first time) and after a visit to the casino not having sufficient money for their return fare. We must not delay action to get the casino, because Auckland and/or Queenstown won’t. — Yours, etc., J. K. MOIR. May 20, 1988.
