Ammunition stolen
By
NEIL CLARKSON
Ammunition worth more than $BOOO has been stolen from two pallets which arrived in Christchurch through Lyttelton.
The police said they were uncertain whether the theft occurred before or after the pallets arrived at the port. Detective Senior-Ser-geant Colin Dalzell said the pallets contained .22 calibre long target ammunition.
The pallets were unpacked at the Lyttelton container terminal between May 11 and May 12. They were then taken to a freight depot at Sockburn and stored overnight. Members of
church Smallbore Rifle Association, who unpacked the shipment, discovered that cases containing thousands of rounds had been stolen from the centre of the pallets. Missing are 50,000 rounds of Eley Tenex ammunition contained in 10 cases.
Also stolen were 10,000 rounds of Eley Club ammunition in two cases and one case of Eley Standard ammunition containing 5000 rounds.
Each case weighs 20kg. The value of the missing ammunition is $8466. ® Would-be thieves went through the drawers of a doctor’s desk after breaking a window at the Main North Road Medical Centre, Papanui, on Tues-
day night. A window to the centre was broken between 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 8.30 a.m. the next day. The offenders appear to have reached through the broken window and gone through the drawers. Nothing was stolen. 9 A chace of potato chips and softdrink cans was found on Wednesday in bushes at Hillmorton High School.
The police said the chips and 56 cans were near the school’s main gates in Tankerville Road. The school’s canteen has been checked but no evidence found of a burglary.
Detective Senior-Ser-geant Dalzell said the confectionery was considered stoldjp.
