Sport in brief
Games off park The Canterbury Rugby Union is leaving nothing to chance as to the condition of Lancaster Park for the first test between New Zealand and Wales on Saturday. The two Trust Bank Canterbury Cup senior matches set down for the oval today have been transferred to other grounds. The curtain-raiser between University and Burnside has been shifted to Ham at 2.45 p.m. and the late game, between Shirley and Christchurch, will be played at Lancaster Park South at 2.45 p.m. “Given the forecast we decided to take no risks as we want to present Lancaster Park in perfect order for the test,” the executive officer of the union, Warren Barbarel, said yesterday.
Dickson shares lead NZPA London New Zealand’s Chris Dickson was joint leader with Britain’s Eddie Warden Owen in the Duracell Royal Lymington Cup match racing yacht series yesterday. Dickson suffered his first loss from six round robin races in Christchurch Bay at the western end of the Isle of Wight when Briton David Bedford overcame a twominute disadvantage to go past him. Ski sale The Canterbury Ski Association sale at Addington Raceway tomorrow is shaping as the biggest in the history of the event. Mike Barber, a spokesman for the organisers, said there had been a heavy demand from commercial interests wanting to sell used and out-of-season equipment. “If the public contribute to a similar degree when they bring equipment for sale today we will certainly be looking at a full house situation.” The sale starts at 9 a.m. Hopes dashed PA Wellington The New Zealand youth tennis team yesterday lost its Asian zone semi-final to Israel, 2-1, and with it the automatic qualification into the World Youth Cup finals. The Kiwis lost both their singles rubber before winning the doubles. Alistair Hunt fought bravely before going down to Nir Dekel, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, but Michael Zorocich just did not have the answers to Avi Fadlun going down 2-6, 1-6, in the other singles tie. N.Z. third NZPA Hong Kong New Zealand finished the first round of the Queen. Sirikit Golf Tournament on a waterlogged Bangkok Navatanee course in third equal position on Thursday. Jan Cooke (Tauranga) shot a 76 and Tracey Hanson (Wellington) a 77 to record an aggregate 153 — three shots behind the leader, Japan. Ingrid Van Steenbergen (Hastings) had putting blues and returned a nine over par 81. Inside sport: Page 24
