Railways building
Sir,—Now that Ensors/ Aldwins/Pages .Roads have at last almost completed their surgery with truly creditable results, may we ask the Railways Corporation what plans it has to rid Christchurch of its eyesore? Over many, many years, motorists, locals, and visitors have suffered this department’s indifference towards their environment, in Ensors Road. This is the only real ugliness alqng this vastly im-
proved roadway and does little toward Railways Corporation public relations. Indeed, Christchurch deserves considerably better than this longstanding lack of care demonstrated towards them, does it not? — Yours, etc., D. BECKER. May 3, 1988.
[The regional engineer for Railways in Christchurch, Mr W. W. Dudding, replies: “The only part of D. Becker’s letter I would disagree with is his claim of the corporation’s indifference to the environment in the area of the Linwood locomotive depot. Any organisation can produce an endless wish list of things to be done, but in the end, resources have to be directed to where the need is greatest and unfortunately Linwood has missed out so far. Shortly the remainder of the old buildings will be demolished, which gets rid of one of the eyesores. A scheme for disposal of surplus land is under preparation now, but naturally the rate of progress will depend on demand.”]
