Reagan endorses Bush
NZPA-Reuter Washington President Reagan yesterday formally endorsed George Bush to be his successor and said he would “work as hard as I can” to help his loyal No. 2 win November’s election.
Mr Reagan, making the endorsement at a SUSISOO ($2235) a plate Republican fund-raising dinner, said in his prepared remarks, “My candidate is a former member of Con-
gress, Ambassador to the United Nations, Director of the C.I.A. and National Chairman of the Republican Party. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to make Vice-President George Bush the next President of the United States.”
Mr Reagan’s endorsement, which came at the conclusion of a speech reviewing his record in office, was only a few sentences long.
“If I may, I’d like to take a moment to say just a word about my future plans,” the President began.
"In doing so, I’ll break a silence I’ve maintained for some time with regard to the Presidential candidates.”
Mr Reagan, avowedly neutral as the race for the Republican nomination ran its course, then said he favoured Bush’s election to succeed him.
