Translators needed
PA Auckland Translators should be employed in some hospitals and Government departments, says the Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Walter Hirsh.
Commenting on a report that hospital cleaners were sometimes used as translators between patients and doctors, he
said: “Quite clearly, there are many people admitted to our hospitals who do not speak English well. “We need to look at creating positions of responsibility where bilingual skills are recognised and paid for.” Mr Hirsh said there was a greater need for translators in Auckland metropolitan hospitals
