New format for ‘Press’ chess
An increase in sponsorship and a new format for the intermediate schools’ competition will mark the eighteenth year of “The Press” chess tournment, to be held in the second term.
The annual tournament for secondary and intermediate schools will have prize money of $7OO — an increase of $250 — and the C grade competition for intermediate schools will be played on a sectional round-robin basis over two school days rather than extend throughout the second term.
A questionnaire on the format for the C grade was sent to intermediate schools and the seven
which replied were all in favour of a quick-fire series.
Apart from the C grade, there will be the usual A and B grades for secondary schools and a special grade for girls’ teams. Teems of six will comprise the A and B grades, C grade teams will consist of five players and girls’ teams will consist of four players. Secondary schools entering one team are expected to enter in the A grade, although inexperienced teams may be entered and accepted, in the B grade at the discretion of the organisers. Any school which considers it has sufficient depth of talent to enter two teams
in the top grade may do
Secondary schools are restricted to a maximum of three teams and intermediate schools and girls’ teams are limited to two teams.
The allocation of prize money for this year’s tournament will be; A grade, $125, $BO, $65, $55. B grade, $75, $5O. C grade, $75, $5O. D grade, $75, $5O.
Entries for this year’s tournament will close oh May 30. Each school is requested to supply a liaison officer with a contact phone number, both home and school. Entries may be sent to “The Press” Chess Competition, Private Bag, Christchurch.
