Inland route to be avoided
Motorists travelling between Christchurch and Nelson are advised by the Automobile Association to use State highway One along the East Coast. The association advises motorists to avoid the inland route, State highway 61, until a replacement bridge across the Shenandoah River is completed. The bridge was destroyed when an L.P.G. tanker jack-knifed after a collision with a car on Wednesday morning.
Traffic on State highway 65 is being diverted at O’Sullivans Bridge, south of Murchison, and at Bumbrae, north of Springs Junction. Traffic can detour over Six Mile Valley Road but an Automobile Association spokesman said the road was rough and unsealed. The road through Lewis Pass to the West Coast is unaffected. The new Shenandoah bridge is not expected to open until next week.
