Lange stands by remarks

PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, is unrepentant over his remarks on New Caledonia which were criticised by the French Government as interfering in its internal affairs. “The comments I made were as mild as possible,” he told reporters yesterday on his return from a week-long trip to Europe.

“It is a matter of international concern. New Caledonia is a matter of New Zealand concern, being our nearest neighbour.

“I make no apology for what I said. “New Zealand has issues of sovereignty at stake and issues of principle, and I would reiterate all those remarks were I asked to do so again.”
