Lights dispute unresolved
A meeting will be held to try to solve the twoyear stalemate between the Edgeware Tennis Club and nearby residents over lights at the club’s Innes Road site. Four households are still unhappy about what they believe is excessive illumination and glare from the club’s six 10mtall light standards. Mr B. Aitchison told members of the Christchurch City Council parks and recreation committee of "Colditz-type treatment” from the floodlights. The council’s approval of the lights in 1986 was a "monumental blunder,” Mr Aitchison said: , Cr Clive Cotton said that the council, which administers the reserve
on which the lights are sited, had restricted the club in its use of the lights on Friday and Saturday evenings. That had been an attempt to solve the dispute six months ago He believed the lights were a real problem for some residents. The chairman of the tennis club, Mr Paul Gibson, said he had been involved as a lighting engineer in the design of the lighting.
Louvres had been added to the lights after complaints from about 15 residents. Most had been satisfied. Gardens
■ Activities .to,. mark 125 years of the Botanic Gardens are being planned for Labour Day week-end.
They include a Mayoral reception, tours of the gardens, group photographs, a garden party, a church service, a commemorative tree-planting, a luncheon at Mona Vale, and the unveiling of a “special feature” to mark the anniversary. The production of a special brochure, the establishment of “Friends of the Botanic Gardens,” and a management plan for the Gardens were other aims for the year. A Royal charter was also being investigated. Hansen Park
Public notice of a draft management plan for Hansen Park will be given.
The plan includes a pedestrian-cycle bridge
over the Heathcote River in Aynsley Terrace, sports competitions restricted to local competitions, a district play area, a fitness track, and picnic areas. The Opawa-St Martins Neighbourhood Group’s 1986 management plan for the park contributed a significant part of the council’s plan. Softball Two areas of land at Cuthberts Green needed for Canterbury softball development will be transferred from the Christchurch Drainage Board to the council. The exchange tidies up access to the softball diamonds and provides for extensions to Cowles Stadium and Skellerup Hall.
