Cardwell dropped
PA Auckland The controversial Australian squash star, Vicki Cardwell, has been dropped from next month’s New Zealand challenge series because of her ties with South Africa. Cardwell, a former world champion, has been replaced by her compatriot, Michelle Martin, who recently upset Devoy in the quarter-finals of the French Open. Representatives from the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association and the series promoter, Harvard Sports, met in Auckland last evening to discuss Cardwell’s invitation after it was revealed on Monday that she flew to South Africa on Saturday. The N.Z.S.R.A. executive‘director, Robin Espie, said the promoter of the series, to be played in Palmerston North on June 12 and Auckland on June 19, was not prepared to risk serious disruption of the event by anti-, apartheid protesters.
