Addington market Better quality stock help lift prices
Better-quality stock helped both lamb and sheep prices to improve at Addington market yesterday. The inclusion of heavier animals than last week helped boost top prices, and over-all values increased by $1.50 to $2. An exceptional pen of woolly ram lambs from D. R. Bennett, Ashburton, reached $30.80. A few other sales were made at $27.
Cattle prices followed another drop in schedule rates, falling about 5c a kilogram to sell as low as $1.60 a kg. The market lacked heavy-weight steers and heifers. Prime lambs
Lamb prices improved between $1.50 and $2 with buyers able to compete for some good-quality stock. A few exceptional pens of woolly rams sold at $25 to $3O, helping give a sounder tone to the market.
Outside competition among the buyers helped the increase. Lighter lambs showed a definite strengthening in price, bringing them in line with last week’s store lamb sale. A total of 1838 lambs was yarded, compared with 1309 last week. Values were: Heavy lambs, $lB to $22, with sales to $30.80. Medium lambs, $l6 to $l9. Light lambs, $l2 to $l5. Sales included.— B.
