Gold drags Aust, down

NZPA-AAP Sydney The effects of falls in international gold and crude oil prices dragged the Australian sharemarket to a weak close on low volumes yesterday. Brokers said the market had responded negatively to the overnight falls on overseas markets. “They were certainly a catalyst in today’s market,” one broker said. “Otherwise it was a very dull day and if the low volumes continue I can see more redundancies in the industry,” he added. By the close of floor trading the ail ordinaries index had lost 11.1 to 1444.7 and the gold sector tumbled 24.4 to 1742.6. The all industrials fell 11.7 to 2329.6 and the all resources 10.1 to 776.7. National turnover was 75 million shares worth sAust94M. Falls outnumbered rises by 279 to 202. The international gold price lost nearly SUSS (8NZ7.35) to 8U5444.50

(8NZ653.41) an ounce and U.S. crude oil prices fell USBBc to BUSI7.iI a barrel. Heavyweight resource stocks bore the brunt of the selling with Western Mining Corp down 10c to 536. Four cent losses took MIM to 162 and CRA to 712. North Broken Hill was 6c lower at 276. Among energy stocks, sector leader Santos slid 15c to 450 and Ampol Exploration fell 5c to 330. Among gold stocks, Metana and Sons of Gwalia both fell 10c to 810 and 640 respectively. Bougainville fell 3c to 317 while Emperor, bidding for gold investor, Minoil, was unchanged at 330. On the industrial board, attention focused mainly on BHP and on companies involved in the Bell Group sellout. BHP slid 12c to 750. Bell Group fell 6c to 174 following criticism of the deal by minority shareholders. Bell Resources rose 1c to 169 amid continuing speculation
