East calls on Govt to rein in tribunal
PA Wellington The Government should reassure owners of freehold land titles that they would not have their property taken by the Waitangi Tribunal, said the Opposition spokesman on justice, Mr Paul East. “There is a widespread concern among ordinary citizens that their homes or farms could be taken away. The concern is probably ill-founded but should be put to rest,” he told a forum on race relations organised by the National Party in Hamilton at the week-end.
Mr East also criticised planned law changes giving the Waitangi Tribunal the power to make decisions on ownership of land held by State-owned enterprises. “The tribunal is a body which makes recommendations and should not be allowed to make final decisions without any right of appeal. “All New Zealanders, as taxpayers, will be required to foot the bill for these decisions and they are entitled to a right of appeal,” said Mr East, member of Parliament for Rotorua.
