Waimak. potential on show
Christchurch’s “high-country playground,” the Waimakariri Basin, buzzed to the sound of helicopters and jet boats yesterday during a field day held to discuss the area’s tourist potential. Landowners, developers and administrators were brought together for the day and given first-hand experience of the area by helicopter, jet boat and raft. The group included the chairwoman of the Canterbury United Council, Mrs Margaret Murray, and the assistant director of the Tourist and Publicity Department, Mr Bernard Brown. “The aim of the day was to bring together a small group of people directly involved in deci-sion-making and the tourist industry of this part of the country,” said the organiser, Mr Tony Newton, a consultant with the Ministry of Forestry. The potential of the Waimakariri Basin had not been fully exploited, he said. “It is easily accessible by road and railway as a through route to the West Coast,
