S.I. drivers head for Ellesmere
Some of the South Island’s top drivers of super modified cars will vie for honours in 'the Mainfreight Classic at Ellesmere Raceway tomorrow. :
The meeting organiser; Mr Alan Batt, has managed to attract cars from Invercargill. DunedinBlenheim and the West Coast to compete against the top Christchurch drivers.
Heading the influx of visitors will be Jeff Kirk from Invercargill in his 377 Chev-powered Bardahl Topoiino. Kirk won the 1986: Ellesmere event and has been in top form at his home track this season.
Kirk is expected to be
accompanied by Paul Withers (331 Chev Charade) and Chris Hayward in a brand new car.
Dunedin is represented by Tony Korner in a Chev-powered Monza while Steve Wickman will drive his recently acquired Mazda 138-engined car which has a very favourable power to weight ratio.
The visitors will face a tough contingent of Woodford Glen drivers, including Doug Giles, «J,phn Lovelady and Graeme Archibold, ail of who know the Ellesmere circuit well.
Supporting the Mainfreigtit Classic will be races for limited modifieds, mini sprints, saloons and 3-wheelers. i
