M.P. calls for wage restraint

PA Wellington A Labour member of Parliament has called on his colleagues to exercise restraint in putting forward their proposals for the next Higher Salariles Commission review of their pay. ! The member of Parliament for Hawke's Bay, Dr Bill Sutton, said most wage and salary earners received a 7 per cent increase in the last round and were expecting increases of between 5 and 6 per cent in the next round. On that basis members of Parliament should (be entitled to an increase of 13 to 14 per cent , for the two years. “Any greater increases would be out of line with the Government's economic policy and could result in widespread resentment among lowincome and middle-in-come earners who were bearing the brunt of policies designed to get [inflation and interest rates down to low single-figure levels," he said.
