The big projects in the city’s heart add 115,01)0 sq m to central-city floorspace, more than I four times the average fqr the preceding 15 years, these projects include; 17 pew office buildings, one park! ing building, and I the Parkroyal Hotel. Fifty-nine new warehouses and factories add 33.000 sq m' to the central industrial floorspace. In (the suburbs, record industrial floorspace permits were issued for 46,000 sq m, including an indoor tennis building and 35 factories and warehouses.
The 7700 sq m of commercial floorspace, for which permits' were granted in the suburbs, is about the same as previous years. Permits fqr 515 new residential units were granted in 1987-88. This is down on past years. In the inner city, only 151 new units were ;ap? proved. The main residential building was in Merivale, St Albans, Sydenham. Linwood and Addington.
In suburban areas permits for new units numbered 364. Up slightly on the previous year,: the total is down on the average for the last 10 years. The highest level of subdivisions was recorded since 1976-77. ' One new commercial and 256 residential and 13 industrial allotments'were created.
