‘Drink, biff’ under attack
PA j Auckland An Auckland group is campaigning against. the New Zealand "drink and biff attitude towards bottles. I The Bottle Action Campaign stems from concern about; injuries caused by brokeh boitles in public places.
The group believes a; refund on all drink bottles i should be j mandatory so i that they are returned to i be recycled. The campaign's coordinator, Ms Sonya Gal-] braith, said a "drink and discard” philosophy was] encouraged by the huge swing towards non-refill-1 able, i non-refundable bottles. -
The group's research in! schools had shown 24 per,! cent of children suffered, some form of injury from, broken bottles in public places. The Boitle Action Cam-; paign is totally in support of a Ministry of Environment report on packaging released late last year. It recommended investigating the use of refillable containers, incen tives for recycling glass. I mandatory refund op i bottles, aind harsh penalties for Ihterbugs.
