Air Force pilots
( Sir, — Regarding the letter from James Bacon (April 12 j on why Air Force! pilots are leaving the service in I large numbers, it would seem that the services in Australia are; having similar problems, posisibly even worse than our own.j The March/April edition of "Australian Aviation” contains an interesting article entitled “Where have all [the pilots gone?” (which details (the unhappy state! of the Royal Aus- ( Italian Air I Force. It says ; R.A.A.F. pilots are resigning at (
the rate of 150 a year, while the flying schools are producing replacements only at the rate of 65 a year. Reasons given for this appalling state are very much a mixture of the problems! mentioned by the R.N.Z.A.Fi and James Bacon — low pay, frequent postings, low morale, poor housing, with pilots in particular being confronted with the (likelihood of a desk job at 39, and the world’s airlines competing (for the limited supply of experienced young pilots. Clearly, membership of A.N.Z.U.S. is only of minor importance in I itself, and New’ Zealand’s underlying problems are probably siniilar to those of other Western Governments. It would requii-e (extremely bold initiatives by such Governments to restore the situation. — Yours, etc., D. J. DUXBURY. April 13, 1988.
