Canty becomes outright leader

PA ! Sydney Canterbury moved into the outright lead in the Sydney rugby] league premiership after beating Penrith, 18-12, in a hard-fought game at Belmore Sports Ground. Before the week-end's round Canterbury shared the lead with Penrith, Brisbane and Canberra, but the Cronulla Sharks mauled the Brisbane Broncos, 38-8, on Saturday and Canberra suffered the biggest upset of the week-end when downed, 12-48, by Parramatta.

Penrith led 6-2 midway through the first half and always stayed in contention. But the Canterbury five-eighths, Terry Lamb, made a crucial difference between the sides, figuring in two of Canterbury’s three tries.

Parramatta, which suffered a 12-64 hiding from Manly last month, ran in seven tries to two against Canberra
