New Brighton grabs relay honours
More than 800 runners took part in the Hagley Memorial Relays at Hagley Park in Christchurch yesterday. As expected, the powerful New Brighton club won the senior men's .six-lap relayover 24km for the third successive year, while Universitywon the women's relay for the third year in a row.
The Christchurch men's team was second for the second successive year, while Olympic improved to third after finishing sixth last year and fifth in 1986.
In the women's four-lap relay newcomer Christine Morris put the University team into the lead on the first lap and with a brilliant run by veteran Prue Taylor on the second lap University was never caught. New Brighton was second for the third year, while Christchurch, led by Margaret Walker, was third. In a day for the favourites. Olympic won the veteran men's grade and Sumner the veteran women's.
