Members of the Lancaster Park ground staff hoist the new goal posts yesterday. The aluminium posts, nearly 18 metres tall, were made in two sections in Dunedin at a cost of $5000. The 1988 Guinness Book of Records shows the highest rugby union goal posts in the world are 33.54 metres (110ft and a half inch) in Luanshya, Zambia. A second reference records the posts at the rugby ground in Brixham, Devon, as being a comparable 17.67 metres tall, including a 30cm spike. By comparison, the mast of the yacht New Zealand is 51 metres above the deckline. The first match using the new posts will be the Canterbury v. Queensland South Pacific championship rugby match on April 24.
