Tourist figures
Sir,—Why is good news not news? It is doom and gloom in the tourist industry, we read in [a feature in "The Press” on March
30. “Stark facts” are revealed by records from 30 tourist operators dealing with 60 per cent of all tourists: tourist numbers from all over the world are up by [“a measly 3 per cent over the last three years.” But wait a minute! Tucked away in a corner of palge 33 of "The Press” of two months earlier, January 30, is an article of one-quarter the size telling us that in the past year tourist numbers, as usual, are up,' up and up. These are facts [from the Statistics Department., An overall increase in just one measly year of 16 per cent, with Japan up 23 per cent, the United States up 20 per cent, and even Australia up 5 per cent? We [can only infer that tourist operators dealing with the other 40 per cent of tourists are having a ball. Why not interview them?—Yours, etc., G. R. WOOD. April 8, 1988.
