Tour guides
Sir, —Like. A. McLauchlan (March 21), I was annoyed to see the Japan Travel Bureau advertisement for tour guides state "preference for Japanese nationals.” I have heard! Japanese visitors express delight and amazement at the language proficiency and extensive; knowledge of New Zealand [demonstrated by! locally [trained Japanese-speaking Kiwi guides. If I travel to Japan, or any non-English-speaking country; with a four, the last; thing I want; is to be [escorted by a Kiwi who has a hastily assembled and sketchy knowledge of the country [T’ve come to see and learn about. How much better to meet and enjoy a new country with a local who speaks'my language, well. I wonder abotit the feelings, when they see an advertisement like this, of the young people who are currently studying so hard to prepare themselves for jobs in our tourist industry. Many must find part-time work to supplement the Student Tertiary Bursary of less than $5O a week, so they often study all week and then work for most of the weekend. Why should they bother, when they could throw it in and get nearly three times as much on the dole? Record unemployment, qualified and competent workers available and yet we employ non-New Zealanders.
Doesn't make sense 'to me.— Yours, etc., J. BOYER. March 27, 1988.
