Picket planned to support award claims

The | Canterbury branch of the Timberworkers’ Union plans to picket a (ship expected at Lyttelton to load timber fo(r export. The union’s Canterbury branch secretary, Mr Don Smith, said the picket of the ship Boleslaw j Ruminski would be. in support of award claims. Timberworkers in Canterbury had nor other way of supporting their claims.
The union would report back to its 500 members before taking
the action, he said. The union seeks a 7 per cent wage increase which many employers in the area are already paying, a pass-on clause to protect! above-award payments, sick leave' provisions, and bereavement leave.
Employers had not ibeen willing to meet to discuss the claims and had shown no intention of negotiating, Mr Smith said.
