Pember “P.K” Gazzard, who once hated mowing lawns, now cuts 20 acres of fine turf which he grows as farm manager for Turf World, near Prebbleton. The instant lawn ends up in a variety of places, usually home sites, sports fields or industrial sites, but there have been some other odd uses. One Oamaru florist covered the floor of his shop with the instant lawn for St Patrick’s Day, while a Christchurch man filled in his swimming pool and covered it with turf to entertain a large group. It takes about 18 months for the turf to reach a stage where it is ready to be lifted and transplanted. Before this it is given a “grooming” cut but is otherwise cut by gang mowers towed behind a tractdr.
