Surf rescue boat titles
Crews from the Waimairi club won both the A and B grade sections of the South Island Europa surf rescue boat championships [at Taylors Mistake on lSaturday. [ The championships were held in a rough two-metre surf but were completed before the southerly storm struck Christchurch in midafternoon. Two crews from Sumner were able to put their expertise into practice ,qn their return from Taylors Mistake. Four surf board . riders had been swept out to sea off Scarborough Beach by 40 knot winds and [the two craft, belonging to the Sumner Surf Life-saving Club, were used to help bring the riders back to shore. '
There was anpther incident during the championships when a Taylors! Mistake boat lost its motor, [it was recovered on Sunday from two metres of water. !
Waimairi won the B grade with three consecutive wins to finish with 15 I points. Second was Sumner' [with 112 points and New Brighton was third with three points. . j
Neville Pope and ,R,on Jones, were the successful Waimairi crew. I | The pair was also able [to compete in the A grade! and they won that title in the last event of the day. the mass rescue. They edged out thbir closest rival, New Brighton, by two metres! Waimairi finished with 14 points, N[ew Brighton had 12 and Sumner was third with' nine [points. All three crews qualified for the New Zealand chdmpionships to be held in October. ! '
