Twin club promotion valuable exercise
By DAVID McCarthy
A "contra deal” be- i tween thfe two clubs rac- ; ing at Addington and, Riccarton proved a valuable I promotion! for all con-( cerned over Easter. J Members of the Canter-| bury Jockey Club were invited to ! experience the. Addington facilities on Easter Cup day and the invitation 1 was returned? for the final day of the Riccarton carnival on Saturday to I members of the Metropolitan Trotting Club.
'• “We estimate about 700 people : all told took advantage of the offer,’} said
the CJC secretary, David Lloyd. , j( | I “Ovec 300 came to Riccarton, and Addington (got a very gobd ( response from our members. Both codes benefited! from the move.”( '
Mr Lloyd felt only (adverse weather (conditions prevented a bumper day at Riccarton where the on-course turnover was still satisfactory at just under : $400,000, not $234,000 as advised by the T.A.B. . j|| South Island-trained horses had one of their best Easter carnivals, for years winning twenty of
the twenty-eight races. Their success was most marked on the last day, on Saturday, when southern iiprses won eight of the! ten events on a day (which often proves more successful for visiting (horses from the north.
Paddy Busuttin, whose five wins at Riccarton on one programme in November 1986, is a record for the track, won only two races over the three days this time. The Riccarton Kerr stable, with three wins, was the most successful at the meeting.
