Sheri Sturmey, has at long last been found to play for the Canterbury women’s basketball league! team in this year’s division one basketball league which commences on May 7 and 8. [! !; ’ An 1 American agent, Gerry Webber, has been searching for a player for the Canterbury coach, Mr Bill Whelan, since late Decehiber and after months of frustrating delays and many overseas telephone calls, has settled on a Canadian woman, aged 22, from the Simeon Fraser University in Vancouver. Sturmey stands slightly over) I.Bm and is a post player. She was her side’s leading scorer averaging 16 points and second best rebounder with i 8 per game. She attended a college in Washington where she was scouted by several i leading American universities but decided to
decline the offers and returned to Canada the last two seasons. Mr Whelan requested a sound player that [could fit into and assist the home grown talent He! did not want a) 40 point star whoi would win matches but not help the team. Among many other players Mr Webber had considered for Canterbury) was Chanel Hampton, who! r has appeared both for the Southland and Auckland league [sides. | Regular rival Southland is now unable [to meet Canterbury in a warm up fixture. Otago is considering a return match offer to meet Canterbury the week-end ! before the league continences. Canterbury lost to Otago in Oamaru last month but was not disgraced and finished runner up to the strong Wellington side at the Napier Easter tournament 1 I 1
