Attacks on police

Sir,—The chickens have come home to 1 roost in Mastertort and other parts of New Zealand. Being threatened with terroristtype activities while Government

and police chiefs grope in darkness for some form of panacea, with little result, another unhealthy trend re-emerges all too frequently, and that is threatened vigilante activities. As mod-ern-day policing operates on policies and practices of yesteryear, we are seeing that result. An enthusiastic and innovative approach to policing is well overdue and paramount. Surely when 2000 people march in Masterton, in full support of the police, it must signify the need to establish a‘ police auxiliary (reserve) to the benefit of society. The fact that we haven’t had police auxiliaries (or reserves) here on a national basis is irrelevant. The establishing of a fully trained and efficient police I reserve is society’s only safeguard against the emergence of vigilante groups. We should start now. — Yours, etc., R. A. COOK.
