Political reporter Australia was preparing tp grab New Zealand’s share [ [ of export sheepmeat sales, said the dpposition associate spokesman on agriculture, Mr Denis Marshall (Ra nlgitikei). [ The; [latest Australian Meat [and Livestock Corporation bulletin dealt
with the decline in New; Zealand meat production at length, he said.
“They are monitoring ; the 1 situation very carefully to see what advantage they can gain from the disastrous situation in the! New Zealand meat [ industry,” said Mr Marshall.
They saw potential [
benefit [ for Australian lamb exports with reduced competitive pressure in markets such as Japan i and the United States, ; th[e Middle East, and the Pacific. The Australians believed that if the Meat Workers’ [Union went on strike, would be further damage to New Zealand’s markets.
