Wool staff cut

By RICHARD CRESSWELL, industrial reporter The Christchurch branch of the Wool Testing Authority has cut staff by 11, said the Canterbury secretary of the Woollen Workers’ Union, Mr Andy Lea, last evening. Production-line testing was being mbved to the authority’s Napier laboratory, while i the Christchurch branch would continue specialised local ‘testing, he said.

The 11 staff finished at Easter and a| redundancy package had [been negotL ated this week.

Nine Woollen Workers’ Union members remain at the Christchurch branch with three management staff. ; The redundant staff had been offered [relocation at the Napier r plant, but many had families or obligations in Christchurch, said Mr Lea.! I

Five staff had accepted the redundancy deal so far.

The authority will continue to employ students during peak testing from October to April, but numbers would be reduced. Mr Lea said the Government had told the authority that the present quango had Ito become a company by! June 30.
