Christchurch City councillors! have been urged to "act like men instead of mice”|and adopt the Victoria ! Square tower commission’s report. In jla 130-page report released j yesterday, the three-member commission I came out strongly against I the Victoria Square tourist tower proposal. j ■ "I think; they (the councillors), should act like men instead of mice and acceplt Ithe commission’s i report as la fair and valid outcome,” said the chairman! lofj the Protect Victoria ! Square Society, Mr Frank Denson. The commission’s report; has recommendations .only and is not binding qn; the council. The report will be considered by th£ council on April 18. Mr Denson praised the commissioners for doing a “brilliant j job.” “I feel ithat the sensitivity of the commissioners really 'does need to be applauded,” he said.
The • campaign against
the tower proposal cost the society up to S7OOO, he said. Much of that money camq from a nucleus of about 25 people working against the tower proposal! Mr Denson said Christchurch people left the work to that nucleus and they owed the group a great] deal for! its efforts. | I A founder member of the society whq sat through the j entire twoweek hearing, Mrs Ann Lewfe, said she was (“absolutely delighted” with the commission’s report. She said the r commissioners had done a marvellous job and had made ordinary citizens feel at ease] when giving their objections.
