Bid for refugee status
Nelson reporter A Sri Lankan who arrived in Nelson last month seeking, refugee status in New Zealand Twill move to Auckland to have his application handled by an immigration lawyer. The man, I who prefers to be knownj only as Mr Fernando, [ arrived from Singapore ! on a tourist’s permit after fleeing Sri Lanka in January. A tourist I hotel taxidriver from Negombo, Mr Fernando,! aged 24, escaped from police custody after being detained because he [was a member of the banned radical youth group, I the People’s Liberation Party. He fears he could be tortured jor killed if forced to return to Sri Lanka. Mr Fernando, a Catholic, has been sponsored by the St Vincent de Paul Society since his arrival in Nelson.
